Easter Lily (Lilium Longiflorum) |
When you have
only two pennies left in the world, buy a loaf of bread with one, and a lily
with the other. ~Chinese Proverb
Not such a good
proverb if you have a cat! For lilies, as much as we like them as a
feature to embellish our lives, are poisonous for cats. Everything in the plant
is dangerous for them, including the pollen if they rub against the plant.
Japanese Show Lily (Lilium Lancifolium) |
You will see
that your kitten or cat has been poisoned if he is vomiting, has anorexia or
depression within 2 hours of the ingestion. Other signs are related to the
allergic reaction like swollen paws or face, breathing difficulties or even paralysis.
But the main
problem in the long term is that they are nephrotoxic and provoke acute and chronic
renal failure.
It is always an
emergency, so please call me (Laura) the mobile vet if you think or suspect and
we will attend as soon as possible to give your cat the necessary treatment and
kidney support.
Stargazer Lily (Lilium Orientalis) |
This will
include inducing vomiting, giving activated charcoal to block the poisons effects,
and intravenous fluids to help the kidneys to filter and flush the poison.
Other drugs may
be given if we observe neurological symptoms like seizing, twitching, and
salivation.
Bear in mind
that there is no such antidote for lily poisoning so it is just a symptomatic
and supportive treatment that is advised for these cases.
Tiger Lily (Lilium Tigrinum) |
The most
dangerous types of lily for felines are the Day Lily (Hemerocalis), Stargazer Lily (Lilium
Orientalis), Rubrum Lily (Lilium Speciosum),
Japanese Show Lily (Lilium Lancifolium),
Tiger Lily (Lilium Tigrinum) and the
Easter Lily (Lilium Longiflorum).
So please, every
time you introduce a new type of plant or flower into your dwellings and garden,
get fully informed about its potential toxicity for your pets and choose the
right location so that curiosity this time won’t kill your cat!
